There is some research suggesting that ginkgo may be useful in erectile dysfunction, due to its ability to stimulate blood flow to the penis. While gingko appears to be relatively safe, it should not be combined with blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), heparin, aspirin, and Trental (pentoxifylline) aspirin, or other NSAIDs. Ginkgo may cause bleeding problems if combined with natural blood thinners such as garlic, phosphatidylserine, and high dose vitamin E. There have been some case reports of subdural hematoma (bleeding in the skull) and hyphema (bleeding into the iris chamber) with ginkgo use. Do not take ginkgo biloba if you have diabetes. Ginkgo biloba can cause allergic skin reactions, elevated blood pressure, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea.
In one study of 60 men with impotence due to poor blood circulation demonstrated a 50% success rate after 6 months. In addition, some research suggests that ginkgo may be useful for impotence caused by drugs in the Prozac family as well as other types of antidepressant medications. Ginkgo biloba extract has demonstrated specific mechanisms of action that counteract age-related vascular disorders.
Ginseng treatment claims are numerous and include its use to support overall health and boost the immune system. Traditional and modern uses of ginseng include recovery from illness, treating erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, and symptoms related to menopause, lowering blood glucose and controlling blood pressure. Ginseng overuse can increase blood pressure. Consult your doctor before taking ginseng if you take nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and/or warfarin (Coumadin), which may increase the risk of bleeding. Ginseng can cause an extreme drop in blood glucose level. Ginseng can cause breast pain, vaginal bleeding after menopause, insomnia, headaches, and nosebleeds. It may produce manic episodes, particularly in people on antidepressants. A great number of ginseng products have been found to contain little or no ginseng. Of particular concern are reports of pesticide and other toxic contaminants in many ginseng products.

Viagra, Levitra, Cialis and Loss of Vision. There have been reports of men with loss of vision in one eye some time after taking Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis. While no conclusions have been made, the FDA recognized the concern and issued the following alert in July, 2005: FDA ALERT (7/2005) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert after reported claims of loss of eyesight in one eye related to their use of ED drugs. The text of their warning follows: “A small number of men have lost eyesight in one eye some time after taking Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. This type of vision loss is called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION causes a sudden loss of eyesight because blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve. We do not know at this time if Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra causes NAION. NAION also happens in men who do not take these medicines. People who have a higher chance for NAION include those who: • have heart disease over 50 years old • have diabetes • have high blood pressure • have high cholesterol • smoke • have certain eye problems FDA has approved new labels for Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra to include information on possible eyesight loss (NAION).”
Counterfeit & Generic ED Drugs
Every day, thousands of Americans shop on websites that promote and sell counterfeit prescription medications without realizing that they are not only breaking the law, but placing their health at risk. The drugs of concern include the blockbuster erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. Millions of ED pills are made every year by companies in India, Mexico and other countries and sold to the American public illegally. Often, these illegal medications contain little, none, or possibly even too much of the active ingredient. FBI and U.S. Food and Drug Administration Concerns “It’s often difficult for consumers to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate Internet ‘pharmacies,’” said Brian Lamkin, Chief of the Financial Crimes Section, FBI. “These websites are cleverly designed to defraud consumers and sell drugs that are not approved by the U.S. FDA.” Buying prescription drugs online from unknown foreign sources is risky business, and people are being advised by the Food and Drug Administration once again to use care when doing so. A recent analysis of three commonly prescribed drugs purchased by the FDA from a Canadian-advertised Web site showed that the “generics” were fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous.
